When Netflix released The Tinder Swindler in 2022, viewers around the world were stunned by the audacity of one man's elaborate deception. The documentary tells the story of Israeli con artist Shimon Hayut, who posed as wealthy diamond heir Simon Leviev to scam women out of millions of dollars.
Presenting himself as the son of billionaire diamond mogul Lev Leviev, Hayut cultivated an image of extreme wealth. Through the dating app Tinder, he matched with women across Europe, showering them with private jet trips, luxury hotels, designer clothing, and lavish dinners. The lifestyle appeared authentic, but it was funded largely with money stolen from previous victims.
Once trust was established, Hayut claimed he was being pursued by dangerous enemies and urgently needed financial help. He persuaded victims to take out loans, open lines of credit, and send him large sums of money. Many believed they were helping the man they loved survive a life-threatening crisis.
The documentary focuses on victims including Cecilie Fjellhøy, Pernilla Sjöholm, and Ayleen Charlotte, who eventually uncovered the scheme and worked together to expose him.
Despite allegations that he defrauded victims of an estimated $10 million, Hayut served only a relatively short prison sentence in Israel for unrelated fraud offenses. Today, he remains a controversial public figure, while many of his victims continue paying debts incurred during the scam.
The story serves as a cautionary tale about online romance, deception, and the dangers of trusting appearances in the digital age.
